Doors are really time heavy. Very actively do everything right. Autobody touch ups specialise in repairing anything cosmetic on a vehicle. With industry experience I have learned a whole lot of skills to perform a quality repair on a vehicle. I have learnt how to repair scratches and scrapes on bumpers, respray whole bumpers, fix cracks in bumpers and also fix holes in bumpers and pull out any dents in the bumpers and reshaping bumpers.
Plastic welding/ gluing and re fitting bumpers. When i carry out a bumper bar scratch repair I will follow a process that I have worked out that is the most efficient and gives me every possibility to carry out a quality repair. When repairing the scratch in the plastic bumper I will assess the damage and choose an orbital sanding disc that I will require to sand out the scratch, the most common sanding disc that I will use is 150 -180 grit sand paper.

I will sand out the scratched/scraped area until the area is all smooth and feathered out into the painted area. When rubbing your fingers over the whole area, it should be smooth and level. If you have used 150 grit to sand the area you must finish sanding the area with 180 grit sand paper. Then you will wet sand the whole area and also a bit of the painted surface about (100mm) around the repair so that the primer can adhere to the area. Dry the area with a microfiber towel and prepare the area for the primer by using a method called back taping (folding the masking tape in half and having a soft edge exposed) which gives you no sharp edges when spraying the primer on the masking tape.
Tape paper around the repaired area so primer overspray doesn’t go onto the vehicle.

Spray 2-3 coats of primer on to the repair area and allow to dry in between coats for 10-15 mins. To quicken up the drying process place a heater in front of the painted area to dry. When the primer has dried then dust the area with a sanding guide which is black powder this is called a guide coat or you can spray it with black spray paint, by doing this it tells you the areas that you have sanded when you do not see the guide coat anymore it means that you have sanded the whole area.

You can repeat this step if you think that the area is not even. Pull off all the back taping and paper. Wet sand the primer area using 800 grit wet sandpaper, sand until the whole primer area is smooth. Using a wet scourer scuff all the areas where you are going to spray the clear coat, by doing this you let the clear coat to adhere to the surface, dry area with a microfiber towel. Tape up all the areas that is not going to be painted by using paper and masking tape. Before painting you will need to clean the area with wax and grease remover to remove any contaminants that might be on the surface spray the whole area and wipe off with two cotton rags,

One to wipe the surface dry and the other one to go over and clean any fibres left by the first rag. To mix the paint you will need to find out the colour code of the vehicle that you are working on, you can usually find the colour code on the vehicle either on a metal plate in the engine bay or in the door jam or in the boot of the vehicle. If code cannot be found you will need to call the dealership that sell this make and tell them the VIN number and they should be able to tell you the colour code. Place colour code into the paint system on the computer and enter an amount of paint that is required to paint the repair area. A formula and quantity will be displayed and using the No-Mix paint system that is located in the Van I will be able to mix the required colour. When you have mixed your paint, double check the colour by placing it up to the car and checking it by eye that it is the same colour to the vehicle that you are going to paint.
If you are not happy with the colour then you will need to alter it by lightening or darkening it. When happy with the colour you will need to reduce it by adding fast Thinners into it, the mix ratio is 50/50 and for silver colours its 60/40.mix the paint and reducer (Thinners) thoroughly. Use a paper paint strainer to pour the paint into HVLP (High Volume Low Pressure) spray gun that i will be using to spray the repaired area. When spraying the area keep the pressure of the air regulator at 28-29 psi and adjust the settings on the spray gun to a low pressure to minimise the overspray and to be able to lay the paint on flat. When applying your first coat a concentrate on the repaired area, spray the area lightly and let to dry. Allow 10-15 minutes between coats depending on the weather. In between coats using a tack rag wipe down the painted surface to clean any dust particles that may be on the surface. When spraying keep a distance of 150mm or 15cm from the spray gun to the surface. When painting metallic colours use a Chris cross motion and lay light coats until the repaired area is covered. Once you have covered the repaired area it is time to blend the new paint into the already painted surface, do this by spraying out the repaired area. When the base coat is dried then it’s time to spray the clear coat. I use De beer 2k clear coat with 4:1 hardener in it and a 20% fast thinners in it. It is an Air dry product that means it takes less time to dry than other 2k clear products.

Mix all the products together and stir thoroughly. When pouring the clear coat into the spray gun use a paper strainer and pour the clear coat through it. Using a tak rag wipe the area that is going to be covered also using the air from the spray gun blow away any dust that may have settled on the painted surface. Spray the clear holding the spray gun about 150mm or 15 cm away from the surface and spray the whole area until it looks wet. Let it dry until its sticky and then re-apply another coat to it making sure the end result looks wet and shiny. Like the base coat the clear coat needs to be blended into the original clear coat so to do this place some fast thinners into a spray gun and when the clear coat is sticky, blend the clear coat and the original clear coat into each other so that there is no dry spots and the whole area looks uniform, wet and shiny. Fixing a dent in the bumper in most cases the bumper bar will have to come off as you need to access behind it. This is done by unscrewing the screws on the inner guard of the bumper and UN clipping any clips that hold the bumper bar to the car and just by pulling the bumper so it comes off. You will need to work the dent from the front of the bumper by heating the plastic bumper using a heat gun. You will need to get behind it to be able to push the dent out. Start by heating up the outer area of the dent and work your way to the middle of the dent while heating it, you must also be pushing from behind the dent to get the shape back of the bumper bar. When the dent has been pushed out sand the area to identify any high and low spots of the bumper, you can either heat up and push down your high spot and also push out your low spots or you can just fill it using filler I use called Bumper soft which is specially made for plastic bumpers. When you have your desired shape you sand the area of the dent with 180 grit and wet sand the area. Back tape the area and mix up you primer by using a 70/30 mix ratio using fast thinners. Spray 2-3 coats on the bumper.
Place a guide coat on the primer area and sand the primer until its smooth and even. Find the colour code on the vehicle and mix up the base coat colour. Spray 2-3 coats of base coat or until the primer is covered. When the base coat is dry mix up the air dry clear coat and spray 2 coats of clear letting the first coat dry until its tacky and sticky then re apply the second coat. Blend out the clear into the original clear and let dry. Detailing- doing a full vehicle detail from the exterior to the interior is a long process. When detailing the exterior i first wash the vehicle cleaning it from any grime and scum .I fill a bucket of cold water and i use a soap with no ph chemical in it so it doesn’t damage the vehicles paint work. I wash it with a microfiber sponge so it doesn’t damage the paint work. I use a high pressure washer to wash away the soap and grime that’s on the vehicle. Chamois the vehicle completely dry before starting the polishing process. Using a clay bar and Auto Glym Quick Detailer I spray and rub the clay bar over each panel of the vehicle removing any contaminants that might be left on the paint work like tar, bird dropping and tree sap. Wipe each panel dry after rubbing it all back with the clay bar. Using a polishing machine with cutting pad (Orange Pad) place small drops of cutting compound onto the pad and work it into each panel until the cutting compound is all gone and you can see the shine on each panel. Wipe off any excess of compound off the panel with your hand and a microfiber cloth. When the panel has been cut with the cutting compound you have to buff each panel to get the fine scratches out of the paint work, you do this with a black polishing pad on the buffer machine. Place small drops of polishing liquid onto the polishing pad and work it into each panel until it comes up shiny, buff the panel by hand with a microfiber cloth. When the whole car is polished hose the whole vehicle down and wash away any excess of the polish which may be left in any gaps on the vehicle. Chamois dry. Cleaning the interior remove all rubbish and a remove the car mats, vacuum the whole car including the car seats both centre console and anywhere dust can get into.Whipe down all interiors and door trims, windows and anything plastic. Clean the windows inside and out. Spray a deodoriser into the carpets. If the seats are leather wipe it down with leather cleaner and dry it off.
